After some surveys were returned to sender, 981 reached their destinations and the
265
responses reflected a response rate of 27%, comprising 24% for the Private sector,
29%
for the Public sector, and 35% for the Not-For-Profit sector.
As shown in Figures 5 and 6, the sample included a range of organisation sizes in terms
of number of staff and annual turnover. Generally, even those organisations with fewer
than 100 full-time-equivalent staff were significant in profile and / or operations – they
were not small family businesses.
The sample included a wide range of industries, and a good representation of local
government, central government departments, district health boards, educational
institutions and other crown agencies, as well as charities. Those industries and sectors
represented are shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9 over the page.
New Zealand’s highest-profile organisations were represented, including some of the
multinationals, banks, holding companies, cultural institutions, wineries, ports and
airports. Some 22 were listed companies.
